Rabies is a viral disease that causes inflammation of the brain. It is spread when an infected animal scratches or bites another animal or human, allowing the rabies virus to spread. Across the world dogs are the most common carrier of rabies. Once bitten by an infected dog or other animal, symptoms begin within one to three months and may include uncontrolled movements, confusion and the inability to move parts of the body. Rabies can only be diagnosed once the symptoms have started, and once they have started the rabies virus is usually fatal. In 2015, over 17,000 people died as a result of rabies worldwide. Attending for rabies vaccination is therefore of utmost importance before travelling to areas including Asia and Africa.
Successful vaccination against rabies has been available since the 1960s, and we are pleased to offer it as part of our travel vaccination programme. Our pharmacists will be able to discuss rabies vaccination with you, as it is important to receive the rabies vaccine if you are travelling to a high risk area, or likely to be working in a high risk situation including working with animals.
At our Touchwood Pharmacy in Northampton, our fully qualified pharmacists can offer advice on vaccinations and other travel queries you may have. There is plenty of parking near to the pharmacy, and we offer a walk in travel vaccination service, making it even easier to attend for your rabies vaccine before you travel. Our prices are highly competitive, and at Touchwood Pharmacy the rabies vaccine costs just £55 per dose. Our experienced staff at our travel vaccination service can also advise on other vaccinations you might need depending on the country you are visiting, including yellow fever or hepatitis vaccinations.
