Rabies is a tropical virus that is carried by dogs and other mammals. It spreads to humans when the infected saliva of the dog or other animal enters the body, for example, following a dog bite. From here, the virus enters the peripheral nerves and travels to the central nervous system, including the brain. The resulting inflammation within the brain causes abnormal behaviour, including violent movements, severe fear of water and loss of consciousness. Symptoms take one to three months to appear, but once they have appeared, rabies is almost always fatal. Having the rabies vaccine before you travel is therefore of extreme importance.
Rabies is a neglected tropical disease, affecting all continents except Antarctica. In 2015, over 17,000 people died as a result of the rabies virus with the majority of deaths occurring in Africa. World Rabies Day in September promotes information, prevention and eradication of rabies. In the UK, we are lucky to have access to the rabies vaccine, and choosing to be vaccinated may be the best decision you ever make.
