Typhoid is a bacterial infection most commonly found in areas where there is poor sanitation or poor hand hygiene. It is caused by a bacteria called salmonella, and is transmitted by ingestion of water or food contaminated by the faeces of someone with the infection. Symptoms appear from six days after ingestion, and include a long-lasting high fever, loss of appetite, aches and pains, and exhaustion. It can last for four or more weeks, leaving the patient emaciated and weak. In severe cases, typhoid can result in damage to the bowel requiring surgery.
Typhoid treatment usually includes oral rehydration fluids and antibiotics. In 2015, over 12 million people worldwide contracted typhoid and so it is no surprise that antibiotic resistance has been seen. This may mean that multiple courses of antibiotics are required to treat the infection.
