What is Hepatitis?
Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. Liver inflammation can be caused in a number of ways, including viruses, drugs and autoimmune diseases. Both hepatitis A and hepatitis B are viruses that damage the cells within the liver, causing hepatitis. You may be at greater risk of contracting hepatitis whilst abroad, so many travellers consider having the hepatitis travel vaccination.
Hepatitis A is usually spread by contaminated water, poor hygiene practices or poor sanitation. It can be ingested in contaminated food, too. Hepatitis B is often sexually transmitted, but can also be spread through infected blood and blood products. If needles are re-used in under-funded hospitals, you could be at risk of contracting Hepatitis B if you need to go to a hospital or doctor for another illness.
What are the Symptoms of Hepatitis?
The early symptoms of hepatitis include a flu-like illness which may comprise loss of appetite, tiredness and muscle aches and pains. Hepatitis A can also lead to a fever. Around one or two weeks later, you may notice jaundice, or yellowing of the skin and eyes. Jaundice signifies that the liver is no longer clearing waste products, and these are now building up in the body. The best way to prevent hepatitis is to ensure you are vaccinated.
What are the Risks with Hepatitis?
In the most severe cases, hepatitis can lead to liver failure. Part of the joy of travelling is embracing the unexpected. However as you can’t plan for every eventuality on holiday, and especially illness, attending for vaccination prior to travel is a sensible idea. How Long Does Hepatitis Vaccination Last For?
The hepatitis A vaccine has been shown to last for around 10 years. The hepatitis B vaccine last for even longer; possibly up to 30 years. Having the vaccination is therefore a good way to protect your health long term.
