If you’re planning a trip abroad, you may have heard the words Yellow Fever being mentioned, but what is yellow fever, and should you consider getting the yellow fever vaccination yourself? At Touchwood Pharmacy, we make it easier for you to make decisions about your travel health before you leave the UK.
What is Yellow Fever?
Yellow fever is a viral infection that is found in the tropics and subtropics. It is a virus carried by the female of the aedes aegypti mosquito. Once a mosquito is infected with the virus, it passes it on by biting a human and transmitting the virus into their bloodstream. You may already know that yellow fever is more prominent in developing countries, and particularly in areas of poor sanitation or where access to insecticides is reduced. Whilst a mosquito bite might be annoying, contracting yellow fever could ruin your travel plans.
Yellow Fever Countries
Yellow fever is found in countries including tropical and subtropical parts of Africa and in South America. The symptoms include loss of appetite, nausea, fever and headache. At first it can be difficult to distinguish from other viral infections, but later the virus can cause damage to the liver and yellowing of the eyes. In some cases it can even cause death. In 2013, it was estimated that 45,000 people had died as a result of yellow fever.
