How to avoid Typhoid Fever?

How to avoid Typhoid Fever?

The easiest way of avoiding typhoid is to have the typhoid fever vaccination and Touchwood Pharmacy offers the typhoid vaccination in Camberley and at their vaccination clinic in Streatham.   Typhoid fever is rife in third world countries but avoiding typhoid is easy, just have the typhoid vaccination.

What are the symptoms of typhoid fever?

Typhoid fever is like a sickness and diarrhoea bug and it manifests with an upset stomach, a loss of appetite and fever. It can also be accompanied by headaches, exhaustion and a cough.  Typhoid originates from the bacteria called Salmonella Typhi which is quite closely related to the bacteria that causes Salmonella, the food poisoning illness.

Typhoid is caused by the bacteria passing from one infected person to another via their faeces and is easily transmitted in locations where there is poor sanitation coupled with weak or absence of hand hygiene.  Certain foods such as shellfish and raw vegetables are also a source of contagion.

Typhoid prevention

Avoiding typhoid is easy, just have the typhoid vaccinationThere are two different types, the Vi vaccine which is one single shot and the Ty21a vaccine which is given by mouth as three capsules taken on three separate days. The typhoid vaccination is not a 100% guarantee that you will not contract the disease so there are some recommended steps you should take when you are abroad to keep yourself safe.  These include:-

  • always wash your hands before you eat or prepare food
  • Only drink bottled water and bottled drinks
  • Avoid ice in your drinks
  • Use bottled water to brush your teeth
  • Avoid raw vegetables and fruit
  • Eat in mainstream restaurants and avoid backstreet cafes and street vendors
