Japanese encephalitis is a tropical virus carried by the Culex mosquito. It is sometimes known as Japanese fever and is found in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. The disease mostly occurs outside of cities in more rural areas. The virus is transmitted to humans by mosquito bites, and symptoms can appear around one to two weeks later. Symptoms include fever, headaches, vomiting and confusion. Encephalitis means inflammation of the brain, and when this begins, the person may develop limb paralysis, neck stiffness and seizures.
There is no known treatment for Japanese encephalitis, and treatment is supportive. This may include medical assistance with feeding, breathing, or seizure control. Many patients require admission to hospital for inpatient treatment. Half of patients who show symptoms are left with permanent neurological problems including deafness or limb weakness. Around 68,000 cases of Japanese encephalitis are reported each year, and in the same time period there are approximately 17,000 deaths. The best way to avoid Japanese encephalitis is to attend for the Japanese encephalitis vaccine prior to leaving Leighton Buzzard.
Our aim is to provide travel healthcare that is accessible to everyone. From our local pharmacy in Leighton Buzzard, we offer a comprehensive travel vaccination service that is competitively priced. The Japanese encephalitis vaccine costs just £85 and is the best way to protect yourself against Japanese encephalitis. Immunity lasts for around two years after vaccination, meaning that you will be protected for any trips to Southeast Asia within this time period. Our experienced staff can also offer advice on other travel vaccinations, and additional travel health precautions you may wish to consider, including insect repellents.
