Japanese encephalitis is caused by the Japanese encephalitis virus, which is carried by Culex mosquitoes. It is sometimes referred to as Japanese fever, and high temperatures are associated with the illness. Not everyone who is infected with the virus shows symptoms, but those who are symptomatic may complain of vomiting and headaches and may become confused. Symptoms tend to start around one to two weeks after the bite. Encephalitis means inflammation of the brain, and once this part of the illness begins, seizures may begin along with limb weakness. Around half of people with symptoms go on to suffer from permanent neurological damage. Japanese encephalitis is certainly an illness you want to protect yourself against before leaving the UK.
There is no specific treatment for Japanese encephalitis. Most people with symptoms of this tropical disease will require admission to hospital, and treatment may include support with feeding and breathing, or treatment of seizures. There are around 68,000 symptomatic cases of Japanese encephalitis each year, and 17,000 deaths. Japanese encephalitis is found in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. If travelling to these areas, attending for the Japanese encephalitis vaccine prior to travel is highly recommended.
The Japanese encephalitis vaccine successfully protects against the virus, and continues to offer immunity for around two years. We are pleased to offer the vaccine from our local Touchwood Pharmacy branch in Ramsgate, where our experienced staff will be able to offer a wealth of information regarding vaccinations and health precautions to consider depending on the details of your trip. We aim to be accessible to all, and the Japanese encephalitis vaccine costs just £85, a small price to pay for peace of mind regarding your health abroad.
