Japanese encephalitis is sometimes called Japanese fever, and is a tropical illness carried by mosquitoes. The virus is transmitted to humans by the infected bite of the Culex mosquito, and it takes approximately one to two weeks for symptoms to occur. Although not everyone shows symptoms, those who do many complain of a headache, vomiting and high fevers. Encephalitis means inflammation of the brain, and when this occurs approximately one week later it can cause confusion, seizures and limb weakness or paralysis. Around half of people with symptoms are left with lifelong neurological problems including deafness and limb paralysis. Japanese encephalitis is certainly not an illness you want to take any chances with, and attending for the Japanese encephalitis vaccine in Walsall before you travel is the safest way to protect yourself against the illness.
There is no specific treatment for Japanese encephalitis, and treatment is aimed at managing the symptoms. Treatment is often needed in hospital, which can be daunting in a foreign country. It may include supporting feeding or breathing, or managing or preventing seizures.
