Rabies is a virus that is transmitted from animals, most commonly dogs, to humans when the infected animal bites or scratches them. With the barrier of the skin breached by the scratch or bite, the virus is able to enter the body. From here, the rabies virus travels along the peripheral nerves in the body before attacking the central nervous system, including the brain. Symptoms take one to three months to appear, and may include uncontrolled movements, confusion and loss of consciousness. Once symptoms have started, rabies is usually fatal. Luckily, a rabies vaccine has been available since the 1960s, and is of paramount importance to anyone travelling to areas where animals are known to carry rabies.
Rabies is known to be carried by animals in Africa, Asia, The Americas and Australia. In 2015, over 17,000 people died from rabies, most of whom were in Africa. Rabies is considered to be a neglected tropical disease, and in September, World Rabies Day aims to promote prevention and eradication of rabies. Anyone who is travelling to an area where rabies is known to be a risk is urged to consider the rabies vaccine, especially if you are going to an area where you might be at greater risk of being bitten or attacked by a dog or other mammal.
