Rabies is a disease carried by dogs and other mammals. It is spread when an infected animal bites or scratches a human, allowing the rabies virus to enter the body and infect that person. Symptoms take around one to three months to begin, and once symptoms have started, in most cases rabies is fatal. Symptoms include uncontrolled excitement, extreme fear of water, confusion and loss of consciousness. Rabies is found in Asia, Africa, The Americas and Australia, and our experienced pharmacists will be able to discuss whether having the rabies vaccine is necessary for your own individual trip.
World Rabies Day in September aims to highlight the prevention and eradication of the rabies virus, showing how serious this illness is worldwide. Rabies is thought of as a neglected tropical disease, but luckily a rabies vaccine has been available since the 1960s. At our Northolt branch, the rabies vaccine costs just £55 per dose. With 17,400 deaths from rabies in 2015, most of which occurred in Africa, having the rabies vaccine may be one of the best decisions you ever make.
At our Northolt branch, our pharmacists understand the excitement and importance of worldwide travel. Many travellers will return from exotic locations with a tropical disease, including typhoid or hepatitis, and we are proud to offer evidence based advice to our customers before they leave the UK to ensure they have eliminated all possible risks of illness whilst away. From the rabies vaccine to risk prevention with mosquito bites, our staff are here to help. We offer a comprehensive travel service to provide up-to-date health advice before you leave the UK, and can offer the vaccinations you need for protection whilst you are away. Having a travel clinic in our local pharmacy makes it easier than ever for you to make sure your health needs are met.
