Typhoid is a nasty bacterial infection caused by salmonella infection in the intestines. It is contracted by ingesting water or food that has been contaminated by the faecal matter of a person with the infection. It is more common in underdeveloped areas where sanitation and hand hygiene are not as effective. Over 12 million cases of typhoid were seen in 2015, and many of these were in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. If you are travelling to a high risk area, having the typhoid vaccine beforehand is highly recommended to avoid illness.
Symptoms of typhoid can take a week to four weeks to appear, and can then last for another four weeks. They include high fever, loss of appetite, abdominal pains, exhaustion and emaciation. Typhoid more commonly affects people up to the age of 19, so if you are planning a gap year or travelling after leaving school, it is important to book your typhoid vaccine now.
The main treatments for typhoid include oral rehydration and antibiotics. The first course of antibiotics does not always work, due to antibiotic resistance, and so a further course may be required. In rare cases, complications such as delirium and damage to the bowel can occur, requiring more intensive treatment and even surgery.
