Typhoid, also known as typhoid fever, is a bacterial infection caused by salmonella. Typhoid is spread by ingesting food or water contaminated with the faeces of an infected person, and is linked to poor sanitation or hand hygiene. It is associated with high fever, weakness, abdominal pain, and headaches. It can start around six days after exposure to the bacteria, and last for around four weeks. It certainly has the potential to spoil your holiday and leave you exhausted and emaciated.
Typhoid fever treatment involves antibiotics, although antibiotic resistance has started to occur, which can make treatment more difficult. In 2015, 12.5 million cases of typhoid were noted, and children can also be affected. Travelling to a high risk area can put you at risk of an illness you’d rather not suffer from when you should be enjoying sightseeing and new cultures. Prevention is better than cure, and the typhoid vaccine is recommended for anyone travelling to a high risk area, including India.
The typhoid vaccine can prevent up to 90% of cases of typhoid in the first two years, and offers some protection for seven years in total. At our typhoid vaccination clinic in Northampton, we want our travel clinic to be accessible to all and therefore keep our prices highly competitive. Each dose of the typhoid vaccine costs just £30.
