Typhoid is also known as typhoid fever. It is a bacterial infection caused by ingestion of the salmonella bacteria. You become ill after eating food or drink that has been contaminated with the faeces of an infected person. This is more common in areas of poor sanitation, or where hand hygiene practices are poor. Typhoid symptoms begin after about six days and include high fever, lethargy and a cough. Over the course of about four weeks, you could experience a rash, abdominal pain, and poor appetite. The patient often becomes exhausted and emaciated. Becoming unwell on holiday is the last thing you need. In 2015, 12.5 million new cases of typhoid were reported worldwide, and vaccination may be one of the best steps you take to avoid contracting typhoid yourself.
Typhoid fever treatment involves oral rehydration and antibiotics. In some cases, typhoid may be resistant to antibiotics and several courses may be required. In rare cases, surgery may be needed for bowel complications. Avoiding typhoid by having the typhoid vaccine before you go to a high risk area is highly recommended.
Typhoid fever outbreaks are regularly reported in Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, and so having the typhoid vaccine prior to travel to these areas is highly recommended. Whether you are leaving the UK for a week or a year, knowing that you are protected against this bacterial infection will give you peace of mind about your health whilst you are away.
