Typhoid, or typhoid fever, is a nasty infectious disease endemic to many parts of the world, including sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. It is caused by salmonella in faeces contaminating food and drinks, and is associated with poor hand hygiene and poor sanitation. Once ingested, symptoms take six to thirty days to begin, and include high, long lasting fever, abdominal pain, headache, loss of appetite and severe weight loss. Symptoms can last for up to a month, giving this infection the opportunity to truly ruin a holiday.
