Yellow fever is a viral infection carried by infected aedes aegypti mosquito. Anyone who travels to Africa, South America or Asia is at risk of infection, unless you have previously been vaccinated or have immunity from past yellow fever infection. Yellow fever begins with non-specific viral symptoms which might include loss of appetite, nausea, headaches or achy joints. Symptoms can quickly become worse, and in some cases require hospital admission or treatment on intensive care. Liver damage or internal bleeding can eventually be fatal, and in 2013, 45,000 people died from yellow fever.
In areas of lower sanitation or where insecticides are not available, yellow fever is likely to be more prevalent, hence being found more frequently in developing countries.
Yellow fever is not included as part of the childhood vaccination schedule, as it is not a virus that is prevalent in the UK. If you are planning to travel to any of the countries affected by yellow fever, you are urged to seriously consider the yellow fever vaccine.
A large programme of vaccination has been carried out for people living in prevalent areas, and so the vaccine is well respected. With just one dose of the yellow fever vaccine, you will be protected against yellow fever within ten days, and this protection will be lifelong. For any subsequent trips to the tropics or subtropics you choose to make, you will not need repeat vaccination.
