At Touchwood Pharmacy, we provide private ear syringing services to our clients. This service is offered by some NHS employed GPs however, because not all GPs offer ear syringing in the UK, it is wise to know whether your local pharmacy is also a provider. Ear syringing can equally be called ear irrigation due to the nature in which the wax build up in your ears is removed. If you are suffering with troublesome symptoms that could indicate ear wax build up, you can obtain this service at our pharmacy locations in Northampton, Streatham, Sydenham and Northolt.

How Do I Know I Have Ear Wax Build Up ?

Ears are naturally self cleaning, however wax build up can still occur. Common symptoms of earwax build-up can include:

  • Sudden loss of hearing
  • Pressure in the ear
  • Tinnitus
  • Earache

Given the symptoms of ear wax buildup, ear syringing can offer a helpful solution to restore your hearing and ear health.

What is Ear Syringing?

Ear Syringing is an effective way to remove any build up of earwax in your ears. The ear syringing procedure only takes a few minutes to complete and can be carried out conveniently at our pharmacy locations in Bromley, Walsall and Lichfield as a private service. During the procedure warm water is gently released into the ear canal to lubricate the excess wax and encourage dislodging. As the stream of water continues, any ear wax build up will be flushed completely out of the ear. You might benefit from earwax removal using a syringe if:

  • Your ear canals contain a lot of hair
  • Your ear canals are narrow or damaged
  • Your ear canals are affected by a skin condition on your scalp or surrounding areas
  • Your ear canals experience inflammation

Is Ear Syringing Safe?

As with any medication or procedure, there is always a risk of side effects, however ear syringing is considered safe enough to be offered as a treatment option at many GP surgeries, and now privately through pharmacy providers. Those who have sensitive ears may be encouraged to seek other ear wax removal options such as ear microsuction which eliminate the shock of moisture entering the ear canal. Ear syringing is effective but can temporarily cause dizziness, discomfort or tinnitus after the procedure concludes.

How Do I Prepare for My Appointment?

It may take more than one attempt to remove your wax- so to prepare for your appointment, we recommend using an olive oil product to soften the wax beforehand. Apply olive oil drops or spray Earol (twice a day) from the day you book the appointment, until the day of the appointment (5-7 days). (Always read the label). This may serve to assist in the quick removal of wax.

Before you come in, please call and speak to the pharmacist if;

  • Any pain within the last 90 days
  • Any middle ear infections within the last 90 days
  • Any current or recurrent ear infection
  • Any past operations in or around the ear
  • Suspect you have any foreign bodies in the ear canal
  • Suspect you have a perforated eardrum
  • Any fluid or discharge from inside your ear within the last 90 days

Covid-19

Please do not come into store if you are experiencing symptoms of Covid-19.

During your appointment, you may be required to wear a mask to reduce any risk of transmission.
