Iron is one of the most important minerals in the body.

Iron is one of the most important minerals in the body. The health benefits of iron include maintaining vital functions such as preserving general energy and focus, the immune system and the transportation of oxygen throughout the body in the blood. Whilst eating well and exercise are vital components of living a healthy life, we may still experience certain deficiencies. Certain segments of the population may be at higher risk of iron deficiency anaemia. If you belong to one of the following groups and suffer any symptoms listed below, it may be advisable to make appropriate lifestyle changes and test your iron levels regularly:

Women: childbirth, heavy menstruation and conditions such as fibroids can contribute to anaemia.

Children: between ages 1 and 2,  more iron may be needed during growth spurts. Infants may get less iron as they are switched from breastfeeding to solid foods.

Elderly: those over age 65 may have iron poor diets or chronic disease that decrease iron efficiency or absorption.  Certain medications: Certain drugs such as blood thinners can cause anaemia.

If you are experiencing fatigue, shortness of breath, feeling cold, dizziness or weakness, restless leg syndrome or heart palpitations, you may be low in iron. You can address this , firstly, by increasing your intake of iron rich foods. Some of the best foods high in iron are:

  • Liver
  • Red meat
  • Beans (such as kidney beans and chickpeas)
  • Nuts
  • Dark chocolate
  • Spinach

If increasing your iron rich food intake doesn’t help you feel better, then you may want to consider including a supplement with iron into your daily routine.
