What is Yellow Fever And Where Can I Get Vaccinated?
Yellow fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes. It is so-called because some patients are affected by jaundice so will literally turn yellow. Yellow fever is found in parts of Africa, South America, Central America and Trinidad in the Caribbean. There is a vaccination available if you are travelling to any of these locations where infection is endemic. If you are looking for the yellow fever vaccination in Bromley, Touchwood Pharmacy has a yellow fever clinic in Bromley and we also offer the yellow fever vaccination in Ramsgate.
What are the symptoms of yellow fever?
Yellow fever symptoms include:
· Headache
· A high temperature or fever
· Feeling sick or actual vomiting
· Backache or muscle pain
· Sensitivity to light
· Feelings of malaise and loss of appetite
About a quarter of people who contract yellow fever will go on to experience more severe symptoms including yellowing of the skin and eyes which is called jaundice and bleeding from the mouth, nose, eyes or ears.
What is the treatment for yellow fever?
There is no cure for yellow fever but the disease can be managed symptomatically until it passes which usually takes around three or four days. Of the 25% who develop the more serious symptoms of yellow fever, around half will die. Symptomatic relief includes plenty of hydration and paracetamol or Ibuprofen to manage temperature and aches.
The Yellow fever Vaccine
The yellow fever vaccine provides lifelong immunity so one dose is usually sufficient. Some countries will require you to show a certificate to prove you have been vaccinated against yellow fever. You need to have the vaccine at least ten days before you travel and your certificate will not be valid until after those ten days have elapsed. The vaccine and the certificate are only available from registered yellow fever vaccination centres.
